A quick run up the road past Hanalei. This is the overlook!

We use this overlook a lot. Several of the photos on the Blog are from it. This is looking down the beach before where our beach photos are taken.

There is a large cave near the end of the road. People wade around in the water at the back of it.

Then it was back to the Hanalei NWR!

Ne Ne on one foot, showing off!

This is from near the turnoff on the highway to Hanalei, looking back over the Taro fields.

And of course, more chickens! Surprisingly we have seen a few road kill KFC (Kaua’i Fighting Chickens) on this trip. I don’t recall any from previous trips. Lots of signs saying not to feed them…

A beautiful morning to take out the trash!
Oh, and the wildlife, too! In the Unit. Well, it is the first one we have seen in Hawai’i, so I guess we are lucky! The man with the Raid can said they get into rental cars (and ruined a lot of them over the pandemic while they weren’t being used) and then hitch a ride in on your luggage. Not too many come inside.

So after an otherwise peaceful day we drove down the hill to see some birds. Once you get through the hairpins on the way to Hanalei, and then cross the one lane bridge (if you’ve been here you understand) you can turn left and find…

The Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge! Perhaps the smallest refuge I have ever seen. They share the fields with traditional Taro farmers.
Hawaiian Common Gallinule (moorhen).

The Gallinule and a Black-necked or Hawaiian Stilt.

Cattle Egret. They are all over…almost a numerous as chickens!

We wandered down to Ka’paa for a little shopping at Safeway and a fabric store. A slow day overall.
Lunch by the beach!

While there wasn’t much railroad activity in Hawai’i, there was some. Here is a railroad trestle left right in the middle of Ka’paa! Mainly it was plantation trains here, to get the fruits and such to the ships. This narrow gauge doesn’t even look to be 18 inches…

It would be neat (but next to impossible) to start it back up as a transit railroad.

From Kilauea Point NWR we went down to Anini Beach. They even allow camping there…with a reservation.

From there is was back to Hanalei and lunch. Despite looking “healthy” this thing (which tasted pretty good) has 36 Grams of carbs and lots of calories.

We ate at the L&L BBQ counter. This is a hamburger steak and a teriyaki slice on top of some chili, with rice and pasta salad. Pretty good!

The DLW had the seafood platter. She liked it, other than it was too much fried food.

After lunch we returned to our abode for a while, then it was back down through Hanalei for a sunset sit on the beach!

The roads are mostly newly paved with new paint. They put reflectors on both sides and a double row in the middle. Unfortunately they put the outside reflectors inside the fog lines, and the middle reflectors outside of the middle lines, so they cut almost a foot off the width of each lane. hard to miss those noisy things. Thumpathumpathumpathumpa…

The sunset was so nice that we had to turn around and go back to the Hanalei overlook. You can only get to it from one side of the road now.

And so ends a nice day on Kaua’i!

A quick run to the Princeville Foodland last night…this was the checkout line. Only two cashiers on the job. I think the building could use a refresh…like a whole new building!

We went to the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge this morning. It is the northern most point of the inhabited Hawaiian Islands. We have been here before. It is great for birds, although we didn’t see as many as usual.

Here are two more from that double one lane bridge from the day before yesterday: the Local Courtesy sign;

A view of both bridges.

Another rainy morning, with high surf warnings. Hanalei, down near the beach.

My morning office and breakfast bar!
(Cellphone panorama with Yvonne DeCarlo!)
It was rainy today. We headed up to Hanalei, and looked at the views through the misty rain…

It looks like a Christmas ornament…have to up our game this year…

From the beach: distant mountains and the surf. All in the rain.

W headed down to Ka’Paa and found a sit-down restaurant. There are a lot of food trucks here. There is even on for sale!

The floor show was at no extra charge and they wander around between the guests.
And another rooster…

Back our resort, the rain was still beading nicely on the plants outside of our door.

All in all, a mellow and wet day in and on Kaua’i!
…I found a few more on the cellphone! Overlooking Hanalei.

One of the many bridges that just seem to soar through the canopies of the forest.

Palm trees.

Dinner on the hoof! Errrr…you know…

It was a quiet afternoon. Although we are beside a main road, it isn’t too noisy.

And then there are the chickens. No one should ever go hungry on Kaua’i if they can catch a chicken! They are everywhere. This one is out on our Lanai. They like to crow and cackle all night long!
