Day 308/Day 14 – Part 1

Our last full day (well, sort of…) in Hawai’i!

The Dailylife Wife took this photo of the Morning Rainbow on her walk .

I was looking for the Camera Club Secret Word of the Month: Yellow.  This is the path that leads to our unit.  Eventually.

And a little more wildlife!

We needed to wash a few things at some point on our vacation, and we found the Resort Laundry.  The DLW asked at the desk if they had any small detergents for it, and the receptionist asked why we weren’t using the one in our unit.

The what?  We had looked out on this useless little fenced “lanai” off the master bathroom, and sure enough, there was a washer and dryer!  I didn’t get to take the photo until we were almost leaving.  The other end held the hot water heater.

We went on down to Hanalei.  It is very picturesque, and the local craft fair/farmers market (there are a lot of those around Kaua’i) is on the left end of the photo.

Then up to the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge Overlook!

They are building or have built a new overlook.  It has restrooms!  This current one is just a wide spot in the road.  The new one is not yet open, but it looks finished from what you can see from the highway.  This is another view of the NWR itself.

In Hawai’i they make things easy on the local cops: the bad guys are required to identify themselves:

One of the neat things about driving in Hawai’i is that occasionally the road sweeps through the tree tops…

This link is for a short video of one of the bridges.  It will open in a new window, but it is 11 MB, so it might take a little while to load.  It only downloads in in Opera.  I don’t know about any other browsers…

Day2230810

We went back to the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and Lighthouse!

And always, more chickens.

Across the road from our Resort is a really nice, and somewhat older (although not by much…it seems to be a mixture) housing area.  We like it!  We can’t afford it!  We Dang It!

Those are Captain Cook Pines.  He planted hundreds, if not thousands of them all around the Pacific on his voyage in the 1700’s.  They are good for masts and spars: Ready on the vine spare parts!

This is our unit, the bottom floor on the left.

This was our last dinner at “home”.  Thank heavens for Costco!

Day 307/Day 13

A longish post: our last Friday on Kaua’i.  We had more wildlife in our unit.  The Dailylife Wife managed to chase him out with more luck than the previous critter.  Her photo.

The view from our parking lot.  Not a scenic landscape, but not too bad…

We had lunch in Hanalei, at a place called Fredrico’s Fresh Mex Cuisine.  It was pretty good (we forgot to take food photos…): it even had a floor show!

This is a likely entry into the Camera Club’s next contest: Yellow!

Back to our favorite beach (easy parking next to the road, and never busy!): Wainiha Beach!

And a few from the Hanalei overlook too:

And you’d think we would be done, but look what we found!

No, we didn’t get them, but they sure looked delicious!

Day 306/Day 12

Down to Hanalei and the beach!

There are several one lane bridges, at least three like this one.

It is two concrete I-beams with a slab laid betwen them, resting on the bottom of the “I”.  Simple, fast and “cheap”.

Apparently the storms in 2018 and 2019 were hard on the old bridges.  The locals wanted them to stay one lane.  It slows the traffic down a lot.

Lots of this for a tiny island!

Then the beach!

And the highlight of the day!

Day 305/Day 11 – Part 2

We lined up at the gate at 5:30.  We met a nice couple from San Francisco or there-abouts, and shared and umbrella during the brief rain storm during our dinner.

Sorry, no food photos…

This was the lead person for both the fire show and the coconut husking demo at the start.

Hawaiians have a secret tool they use to husk coconuts: a pick ax.  This was under a minute, and he used to do it in less than 5 seconds when he was in competition…

After this these are mostly screen grabs, since I was taking video.  I hope to post the videos after I get home and get some decent bandwidth to use!  It was quite a show!

It was a very good show, and a great time was had by all!

Day 305/Day11 – Part 1

It started out a bit rainy.  But we had been passing by this nice looking mini-golf that apparently had, of all things, a “fire show” one Wednesday nights…we got two tickets!

Then we ran down to Ka’paa, but we decided to explore a bit and ran through the actual town, not just the touristy bits.  We found a wonderful, relaxed countryside…

Ixora.

Then it was off to Safeway’s Deli for a “cheap” couple of sandwiches (cheaper than going to a restaurant, anyway!).

Down at the beach we were entertained by this wind surfer while we ate.

The weather was clearing by the time we went back to Princeville for a nap before our dinner and “fire show”.

Next: the Fire Show!

Day 304/Day 10 – Part 4

The long, wet road home!

We drove around after lunch, and about when we headed back to the beach at Poipu it started to sprinkle…but we saw a rainbow!

Rain in Poipu…

“There’s a Giant Leek in the Street!” (Classical reference…go ahead and ask.  I dare you!)

Then the sun broke out, we found a parking spot, ran over to the beach…no turtles and it started to rain again.

So back home we went!

With an obligator stop at Costco (we were nearing empty anyway).

Everywhere else we have seen is $5.65/gallon, with a loan Shell at $5.37…You can pay off your Costco membership quick!

Then it was rain and dark for the drive back to Princeville.

Those infamous reflectors I mentioned previously.

And those reflectors as…art…that’s it:  Art.

Day 304/Day 10 – Part 3

We were driving along minding our own business when what should appear, but the Kaua’i Coffee Company fields and Gift Shop!  We really like their coffee, so stop we did!

Coffee Beans…3100 acres, >4,000,000 coffee bean bushes!

What else might they have there?

Why of course, a giant tin chicken!

Here is the Dailylife Wife photographing a Plumeria Tree.

Nice flowers, if a little past their prime.

I can smell it brewing!

The DLW in a selfie!

And one she took of me…

And my own selfie with my new hat.

Then it was lunchtime at the Kaua’i Brewing Company!  The Mrs. said she wanted a beer.  This is unheard of…and it wasn’t even a Molsen’s!  We shared it, and THEN found out they had sampler size glasses available.

I had a half pound bacon cheese burger…low carbs and overdone onion rings!  The DLW liked her fish and chips, too.

Here are all the beers they had on tap.  I think this is an early evening selection…no way can you pronounce them after you have had a couple.

After the delicious lunch we cruised over to Hanapepe.  The truck’s painted match the cargo!

Turns out Hanapepe was the home of celebrities!  No one ever tells me these things…

Next: the long, wet road home!

Day 304/Day 10 – Part 2

The Spouting Horn!  This is a lava tube through the rocks, that the water rushes into and the spouts upwards as a geyser.

They say there used to be a much bigger one just around the corner, but a plantation owner blew it up because the salt water spray wasn’t good for his pineapple crop.

BTW, the only turtle we saw this day was just a little out in the water by the three guys fishing.  You didn’t see the three fishermen?  If you look in the top photo they are right where the rock and water meet on the left side of the frame.  And no, I don’t see it in the photo either…

Here are four short video clips.  They should open in new windows.

Spouting Horn 480p 2

Spouting Horn 480p 3

Then it was off for more sightseeing!

And the best No Trespassing sign I have ever seen.  Read the fine print.

Next: Coffee and Someone orders a beer!

Day 304/Day 10 – Part 1

A bit of the previous evening that deserves to be seen…

A then can we start the day with a rainbow!  (Photo by the DLW)

We headed south today to Poipu Beach to see if there were actually turtles there as reported.  The landscape changes dramatically from what we have up north in Princeville.

The “tunnel of trees” when you turn towards Poipu.  That 50 MPH sign is as high as the limit goes on Kaua’i.  I have never seen a higher one, and most are lower!  Makes you think twice about having a muscle car here…

Here is a “classic Hawaiian” neighborhood.  For the not-so-poor, anyway!

Then back into the open countryside.

And one of our old friends!

Don’t forget Mrs. Chicken and family!!!

Next: The Spouting Horn!

Day 303 Addendum

I thought some maps of the Hanalei NWR and area might be nice.  The first three are from the Apple map program on my laptop.  The last is from the Hanalei NWR website.
