Day 94: Our Next Morning on Maui!

We got up entirely too early the next morning: 3:45am is when we had to be at the bus and off of the Boat!

We were up at that unhappy hour to go to the very top of Maui, the Crater on top of Haleakala, to watch the sunrise!

It was pretty neat, as you can see, but it was COLD!  Someone could make a fortune renting jackets…hmmm…

It was dark, cold, wet, and windy.  And it isn’t even a volcanic crater: it was made by glaciers…

It slowly went from stars and the Moon to a glowing horizon.  There were a lot of people up there.  There was even someone chanting to the rising sun.

This is a glimpse into the crater.  The clouds kept constantly moving and the show changed by the minute!

The clouds are lighting up!

Our first rays…

After the show, we hopped back in the bus, where remnants of our breakfast pastries and coffee lurked, and headed up to the real top, near the Observatories!  There was frost on the ground and you could see your breath.

It was pretty high, considering we had slept a sea level…

Yes, that sign above the Dailylife Wife does say 10, 023 feet!

Looking off to the Northwest, you can see the two volcanoes on the Big Island, some 28 miles away.

A five photo panorama of the far end of Maui and the ocean below!

And a different four photo panoramic view with the Observatories.  We are the two shadows on the left side of the middle!

The clouds kept moving in and out…

Over by the Observatories, there was a rainbow formed!  It eventually turned into a white “cloudbow” but it was very short lived after that.

You can just barely see the other end of the rainbow above the red rock to the left of the Dailylife Wife!

These are sword plants, and only grow up here…

Then it was back into the rain.  For a while.

We stopped at a nice little shop for coffee and stuff, and they had…chickens!

They also had some neat flowers in the back.  I have no idea what they are.

The same thing not yet opened.

Then it was on back to the Boat for…elephant day!

And that is how we spent our second morning on Maui.  It got interesting in the afternoon.!
