Day 181: Totem Bight, Part 1

Totem Bight State historical Park is the name of our destination.  They have recreated and preserved the history of totem poles and the culture around here as best they can.  There is ongoing new work even now!

These two totem poles below flank the trail head to get to where the poles stand.  This one is a funeral totem: the ashes of the person it was carved for fit inside the back in a hollowed out space.  This became rare as missionaries believed it was some kind of worship of the poles.  It wasn’t.

This pole is a memorial pole…no ashes…

These are the signs at Totem Bight.  They can explain things better than I can.

Aren’t digital cameras wonderful?  You can shoot signs like these and not have to take notes!

In addition to the really nice flower garden at the entrance,

there is a gift shop/park store, and a private gift shop and private learning center next to the park.

Wallpaper Time!  From the trail…

OK, this might be a little weird if anyone sees it and recognizes it on your screen: Skunk Cabbage!

The end of a log!

A Widow Maker!  Well, the Alaska kind any way.  Here in /\/\onTana! a Widow Maker is any snag hitched up in the trees that can fall on you when you cut down some of those trees.  This one is a fungus that grows on the tree bark.  The tree apparently recognizes that and sends out a branch to keep it away from the rest of the tree.  They can fall off and get you, I guess.  Neat looking!

And down the trail we go to the Totem Poles!
