Day 278 – Memorial Falls Part 1

Last Saturday Leslee and I hiked up to Upper Memorial Falls.  The trailhead is a mile past (south or uphill) from Neihart, at the rest area.  Not great weather, but it wasn’t snowing or raining, and not too hot, either.

First you have to cross a bridge by the outhouse, and then the trail starts.

The trail was fairly clear of snow yet, except for the bridges.

It is a bit rocky, and can be slippery with snow on the rocks.

Still a little late summer foliage…Wallpaper sized!

It was a rough (not hard) trail mostly, but there were rock stairs with handrails, and even a nice wooden bench at the Lower Falls!

The Lower Falls is at 1600 feet from the trailhead, according to the sign.  The upper one is another 800 feet.  This set of switchbacks is the steepest spot going to the Upper Falls.

A glimpse of the Upper Falls on the left through the trees.

A closer view.

Leslee hanging onto the trees for dear life…well, maybe it wasn’t >>that<< steep here…

As you can see the Upper Falls (on the left) is like a slide rock for the water, while the Lower Falls (on the right) is more of a direct drop of water.
