<\/p>\nThere is an annual event where the Earth swings through a trail of rubble left behind from a comet (there are several, actually) called the Perseid Meteor Shower. \u00c2\u00a0We see this as shooting stars (meteors) for a night or two in August.<\/p>\n

From The New York Times<\/a>:<\/p>\n “The Perseids occur when Earth runs into pieces of debris floating in the solar system that were left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. The 17-mile-wide dirty snowball orbits the sun about once every 133 years. It made its last close pass by the sun in 1992.<\/em><\/p>\n For this week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shower, Jupiter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s gravity has tugged together at least three meteor streams left by the comet into Earth\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s path. Our planet will run into a cluster of leftovers from Comet Swift-Tuttle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rendezvous in 1862, 1479 and 1079.”<\/em><\/p>\n So early this morning, about 3am, I got up and went out into the Barrow Backyard Observatory (i.e.: I was too tired to actually drive out into the country where there is less light!) and tried to photograph a few of the meteors. \u00c2\u00a0They just appear as streaks. \u00c2\u00a0I did see several (many are viewable with the naked eye) that were brighter than these, but they were between camera shots. \u00c2\u00a0Most of these I didn’t see when the camera was shooting them.<\/p>\n Click on the photos a couple of times to see them full sized. \u00c2\u00a0BACK to return!<\/p>\n To the left of center near the top.<\/p>\n Here’s another one: just to the left above the power pole.<\/p>\n Nope…none here…just a nice photo. \u00c2\u00a0I found I had to take four or five photos to get one meteor.<\/p>\n Just to the right of the power pole.<\/p>\n There is a little short one just to the right of the arm on the power pole<\/p>\n\u00c2\u00a0But you won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be seeing the leftovers of that event. A general rule of thumb with meteor showers is that you are never watching remnants from a comet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most recent orbit. Instead, the burning bits come from the previous pass. In this case, the debris were ejected when Comet Swift-Tuttle visited in 1862 or earlier.<\/em><\/div>\n![\"Day1622401a\"](\"http:\/\/www.dailylife.barrowroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/Day1622401a-600x400.jpg\")
